The greenhouse was imported from France in 2018 and sits alongside the main house of this working ranch in Northern California. The homeowner requested an art glass installation that respects the original greenhouse’s transparency and enhances the views of the surrounding property. Three pointed arch-shaped windows are the site of this site-responsive art glass installation.
All types of flora and fauna, including dragonflies, are found across this rural property. The pattern of dragonfly wings was selected as the inspiration for the glass design because of its openness and strength. The dragonfly wing is an incredibly efficient and equally beautiful structure. Its web-like nature provides enough stability to withstand the forces of gravity and wind.
The art glass concept uses a traditional leaded glass technique in a conventional cold-formed steel structure. Although the glass technology originated over 1,000 years ago, the result is a decidedly modern interpretation of stained glass.
