The sculpture, “Crescent”, was derived from looking at the sloughs that wind through the former salt ponds at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay and the north edge of Sunnyvale. Due to its location, Sunnyvale’s shoreline was an ideal location for commercial salt mining. The practice of collecting salt in this area dates back to the time of the Ohlone nation, where salt crystals would form on the banks of sloughs. Salt still collects on the shore after the shallow waters are evaporated by breezes off the bay. Future plans for Sunnyvale’s shoreline include a regional effort to renovate the former salt ponds and restore the native marshlands.
